CURRENT GRANTS
Funds Awarded Spring 2011
GLOBAL AIDS INTERFAITH ALLIANCE (GAIA) - $80,000
Larkspur, California for project in Malawi
GAIA provides integrated healthcare services in Malawi, a remote and underserved region of sub-Saharan Africa. In the Mulanje District, Mobile Health Clinics have addressed a vital need, delivering medical care to thousands of villagers each month.
Three Elizabeth Taylor Mobile Health Clinics are now deployed in the region, each staffed by a driver, a nurse, a nurse's aide, and a clinical officer. The van stops at the same spot on the same day each week, and villagers wait patiently for its arrival to access care and testing services. Each mobile clinic contains an examination couch, medication, and storage for medical and laboratory supplies. Serving an average of 150 patients per day per clinic, the clinic provides same-day HIV testing (including testing of pregnant women for initiation of treatment to prevent mother-to-child transmission), growth monitoring, family-planning services and prenatal care. The clinic's integrated services include diagnosis and treatment of malaria and testing and treatment of tuberculosis. Over the past 12 months, the three Mobile Health Clinics have served over 93,000 patients, providing life-saving medical care and education.
This ETAF grant will be applied to the operation of the two original mobile clinics in Malawi, staffing of the clinics and the provision of diagnostic and treatment services to residents of remote villages in Malawi.
AIDS PROJECT OF SOUTHERN VERMONT - $2500
Brattleboro, Vermont
A regional AIDS service organization providing direct services to people living with the virus, AIDS Project of Southern Vermont was founded in 1988 by volunteers as a grassroots, community-based group that now fills an important statewide role in the AIDS crisis.

LAUREL FOUNDATION - $5,000
Pasadena, California
Empowering youth, families and children affected by HIV/AIDS, the Laurel Foundation provides summer camp experiences through its Camp Laurel program, a resident camp for children between the ages of 6-17.
Through sharing a bond with other children living with HIV/AIDS, kids at Camp Laurel are now better coping with their illness and socially integrating with their peers. The camp staff includes volunteer physicians, nurses, and a social worker all experienced in the care of children living with HIV/AIDS. Programs are held at sites throughout Southern California, and are free of charge to children and youth affected by HIV/AIDS and their families.
This ETAF grant will support attendance at the Laurel Foundation's summer camp for children affected/infected by HIV/AIDS.
PETS ARE WONDERFUL SUPPORT (PAWS) -$15,000
Los Angeles, California
The healing powers of a companion animal are well documented, and Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS) is an organization dedicated to preserving the loving bond between people with HIV/AIDS and their pets. Founded in 1989 in response to the companion animal-related crises faced by residents of Los Angeles County who were financially and physically debilitated by HIV/AIDS, PAWS has continued to serve the community and meet the financial, physical and emotional challenges of caring for a pet, both in and outside of the home.
PAWS/LA provides a comprehensive package of essential animal support services to those in need, including veterinary care, spay/neuter services, pet food, grooming assistance, temporary foster care and dog walking.
ETAF's grant funds will be used for the provision of veterinary services to pets of people with HIV/AIDS.
RAIN-CENTRAL MISSOURI, INC. - $5,000
Columbia, Missouri
RAIN-CENTRAL MISSOURI's founding mission is to provide compassionate non-medical care to people living with HIV/AIDS, while offering prevention education to the community. The organization is the region's leading STD prevention resource, focused on education, early detection, and compassionate care facilitation.
Through compelling teaching tools RAIN helps communities throughout Missouri greatly reduce or lessen the destructive impact of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV, Hepatitis C and other life-threatening conditions.
ETAF's grant funds will be used for the provision of housing and utility services for people with HIV/AIDS living below Federal poverty levels.
ALLIANCE FOR HOUSING AND HEALING - $7,500 (dba THE SERRA PROJECT/AID for AIDS)
Los Angeles, California
The Serra Project was founded in 1987 to provide safe, caring homes for people living with HIV/AIDS who would otherwise find themselves in unsafe, unhealthy living conditions. Serra provides housing and a range of supportive services to AIDS-impacted persons and their families living below the poverty line in Los Angeles County, including destitute persons who are chronically ill with advanced HIV disease and AIDS.
The organization offers services that include group homes with around-the-clock nursing care, HIV-specific meals and coordination with a variety of support services for those facing AIDS-related homelessness.
Nutrition is an important component in the efficacy of AIDS medications; some must be taken with food, some cannot; others are most effective when taken with low-fat foods and others require consumption with healthy fats, etc. But homeless people have no way to refrigerate their medications and have little or no access to clean water and nutritious food. Without a stable place to live, there is little hope of maximizing the health of this highly vulnerable population.
ETAF's funds will be applied to the purchase of food vouchers for the project's "Keep It Fresh" food program for indigent people living with HIV/AIDS. These supermarket vouchers are a prime example of the immediate and short-term services provided to clients who are impoverished and disabled by HIV/AIDS.

Curriculum is divided into 8-week trimesters (Fall, Winter, Spring) and class topics focus on women as a whole—mind, body and spirit.
ETAF's funds will be applied to the purchase of food and vitamins for low-income women living with HIV/AIDS.
TREATMENT ACTION GROUP - $20,000
New York, New York
Treatment Action Group (TAG) is an independent AIDS research and policy think tank fighting for better treatment, a vaccine, and a cure for AIDS. TAG had its origins in the AIDS activist organization, ACT-UP (the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power).
